Chip McLean’s “Demanding Much”
(original article published 1/16/05)
Dear Mr. McLean:
Thanks so very much for the above article! I too have been absolutely floored by the audacity of Mexico's representatives and citizens in trying to dictate how we will handle OUR border. And I must confess, I'm truly concerned by our own leaders' indifference to the issue. It makes me wonder if there is not some plan already in motion (without the knowledge of American citizens) to join the two nations into an "Amexico" or "Mexerica".
Please keep your articles coming - the public needs to be made aware.
Sincerely,

While it is admirable that Lieberman supports the war effort, I would hardly call him a patriot. Anyone who supports abortion on demand isn’t a patriot in my book.

Chip’s Reply:
My point was that Lieberman was big enough to leave politics at the water’s edge during time of war. No doubt the founders weren’t always in agreement on every issue, either, but in America, there is room for reasonable men to disagree, just as the founders did.

Diane Grassi’s “Levees Not to Blame for Response Management Failures”
(original
article published 9/8/2005)
First of all, I could not agree more
that the Federal Government has spent
too much growing of the
federal bureaucracies and not enough preparing the
nation for potential
disasters.
I would like to point out, however that there was a plan
to evacuate the
people of New Orleans with hundreds of busses available
for the task. For
whatever reason, the mayor did not initiate
the plan. I have also been
informed that the Louisiana state
government turned away supplies from the
Red Cross at the Superdome
because they did not want to attract too many
people to the site.
The
governor of Louisiana waited an extra 24 hours more than she should
have
to call in the Louisiana National Guard and then hesitated a couple
of
days before allowing federal troops to come in to the state to help.
One
might ask where Louisiana's senators and representatives were when
the
funds needed for the levees were diverted to presumably other Homeland
Security
priorities.
I guess what I am trying to say is that I believe that
the Feds (including
President Bush) need to taken to task for failing
to properly prepare the
area for natural disasters. I just get
tired of the other offenders
getting off nearly Scot free when they
are at least as much to blame for
the proportions of this disaster.
Best
regards,

Follow-up to PETA and NC
Yesterday (8/11), at 545pm the Senate voted for S622...the budget. In my previous letter to you, I mentioned H685 that had been sitting in Committee since April 2005.
What I hadn't mentioned was that H685 had a sister bill S529 that appeared to be dead. Which for all purposes is now...for yesterday S622, the budget for the State of NC, made it through on the third reading.
Upon review of the budget, Section 11.5, S529 was rewritten. Good news for the State of North Carolina, for now County animal shelters will be inspected by the Dept of AG. Standards have also been set for euthanasia.
In my previous letter I had asked....What are our Representatives and Senators doing about it? The answer is.....they listened and took action and made it law.

for the Governor's signature)

More
PETA and North Carolina
After seeing many posts on the internet
regarding PETA and North Carolina, I felt it necessary from what I
personally know, to help clarify from an unbiased opinion.
First, everyone needs to understand that standards to county animals shelters were established on August 17th, 2004, under the 2004 Technical Corrections Act as Senate Bill 1225. However, the enforcement of these standards has not been established to date. Presently, still sitting in committee is House Bill 685 since April of 2005. In this bill it would have the Dept of Ag inspect county facilities along with standards set for euthanasia. Big question is what are our Representatives doing about it?? With all this publicity you would think someone other than myself would be addressing it. Well??
Private and non profit facilities have already been inspected for years yet counties have flown under the radar or should I say a good lobbyist.
What happens without inspections?? You get substandard facilities by county government who do not want to put a dime into it for alot of these counties are Tier 1 counties...Poor. Alot of these counties do not train their animal control officers and pay them next to nothing to do the job. It angers me that county governments would make employees work in a disease ridden enviroment and subject these people to high levels of carbon monoxide because of stick built gas chambers that either leak or not properly vented.
I believe North Carolina is ranked number 2 in the nation for the most unwanted and abandoned animals. If you do not have a visual on this yet let me help you....large unwanted animal population and horrific animal shelters with no enforcement in place creates need for mass euthanasia.
Now for the PETA involvement in North Carolina you have a multi issue here. These counties needed the free help for humane euthanasia however it is how PETA did it along with tossing in the dumpster that became the issue.
Now here is the twist to the involvement with PETA and North Carolina......a local humane group in Warren County asked PETA for help with adoption of approx 1,000 dogs and cats covering a period 7 months. see news article....
http://www.vancnews.com/articles/2005/07/13/warrenton/news/news07.txt
The article is self explanatory and I do not condone PETA's actions in either Hertford county nor Warren County. However, I and hope others will look at the big picture .....which is in Raleigh NC......The Legislative Building. Again, I ask....with all this national attention...what are the Congressman and Senators doing about it....remember House Bill 685.
Thank you

Diversity/Are White Republicans Ready for Black Republicans?
Nelson
Taylor might have seen our booth in Las Vegas promoting a black
Republican
by the name of Condoleezza Rice. As the national co-chair of
the
group, my travels have taken me to Las Vegas, Tallahassee, Washington
DC, and
North Carolina to show our "Condi in 2008" campaign
items. During those
visits, hundreds of African-Americans gather
to get as much information as possbile,
including our website:
In
fact, the AP story on July 19 displayed this banner "SOME IN
GOP HOPE
RICE RUNS FOR PRESIDENT". Our website had over 3,500
hits in 24 hours in
addition to donations from the visitors.
Team Condi is representative of our nation; men and women, white
and
black and hispanic all working to promote our vision for the next
White House.
So we are pleased Nelson Taylor was energized by
the support of black
Republicans in Las Vegas, and I hope to see him
in the future. The Republican party
is a "big tent",
with political leaders like JC Watts, Mike Steele, Jeanette
Bradley,
Ken Blackwell, and Herman Cain all showing the diversity to help our
nation solve problems.

Nathan Tabor’s “PETA is
an Animal's Worst Friend”
editor’s note: At the conclusion of
the reader’s letter is a reply from Mr. Tabor
I can appreciate
Mr. Tabor's desire to use his public voice as a means of defending
the actions of his fellow Carolinians, after all, what good is having
a public voice if it is not used? What disappoints me is that his
article goes on a full-frontal attack of PETA, without addressing
the underlying issue: a glut of unwanted animals dumped by those fellow
Carolinians at a county repository apparently designed not for adoption,
but for the purpose of storing those animals until they can be euthanized.
I had read numerous accounts about the situation in Bertie
County and decided to make the two hour drive down there to see for
myself what the shelter was actually like and then make an informed
decision.
After driving around for a considerable period of time,
I finally found the shelter.. off one of the side-streets, hidden
from public view. It consists of a large fenced-in area, with cinderblock
walls and a roof towards the back. Individual "runs" were created
with chain-link fence, all leading to a common area. While the back
cover might provide shade in the summer, it would do little to protect
the dogs from the severe elements. Each run had a dog house (presumably
donated by PETA, because they were of the same design and construction
as those PETA distributes for free in this area). Each run also had
its own food dish and water pail. Unfortunately, the water pails were
so tall that a puppy or small breed dog would not be able to reach
it to quench his thirst on a hot day.
There were no signs of
any sort on or around the shelter-- nothing listing operating hours,
emergency phone numbers, nothing that would indicate the place was
anything other than a dumping place for unwanted animals. This flies
in the face of the article in our local paper with the cute picture
of a puppy and the caption "waiting for adoption". I tracked
down the phone number of the animal control agent and left him a voicemail,
offering to wait there for him. Today, 96 hours later, still no return
phone call.
People have been quite vocal about PETA's budget,
and many have mistakenly compared PETA's placement rate with that
of shelters. While the shelters in question focus their efforts and
budgets mainly on household animals, PETA's stated mission is to alleviate/eliminate
the abuse and suffering of ALL animals. Their campaigns not only target
preventing abuse of household pets-they extend to fighting cruelty
in factory farming, mistreatment of lab animals, circus animals, virtually
anywhere animal abuse is known, PETA is fighting it. As someone else
point out pointed out, PETA's tax returns are available for public
viewing on guidestar.org. When I looked there, I saw 13 pages of donations
made to animal hospitals, animal sanctuaries, and a host of other
groups around the world who work on the animals' behalf. The salaries
of the officers, management, and staff are SIGNIFICANTLY below industry/commercial
standards. The monies they have and the monies they collect are used
on behalf of all animals.
I am sure that if any self-proclaimed
rescue groups had come forward and volunteered to pick up the animals
on a regular basis, Bertie County would have been happy to oblige
them. Reality is that they did not, the animals at the shelter were
not receiving medical attention, nor were they being euthanized humanely,
so PETA stepped in.
News and web articles have gone into great
detail about Bertie County resuming their responsibility for euthanizing
and disposing of the remains of animals turned over to them, but there
has been little or no mention of adoption. Seems to me that the folks
in Bertie County are more interested in euthanizing animals than they
are in finding homes for them. My only hope is that instead of using
bullets or a gas chamber the way they used to, they will be as humane
as PETA was in giving the animals a peaceful death.
The fact
that Mr. Tabor cites the Center for Consumer Freedom doesn't surprise
me. The hypocritical moral outrage shouted out in a shrill voice by
that group is both revolting and predictable. This "freedom"
banner they wave is woven from the same fabric as the funereal shrouds
of countless millions of animals who have lived intolerable lives
of cruelty and suffered unspeakably horrible deaths at the hands of
the food industry. Naturally, this center for "freedom"
is the sharpest critic of the actions of the two PETA employees; The
Center for Consumer Freedom is a nonprofit coalition of restaurants,
food companies, and others. It is funded by Tyson Foods, Armour-Swift,
Purdue Farms, and a host of other food companies ( <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Center_for_Consumer_Freedom>
) many of which have been the target of investigation because of their
questionable treatment of animals.
Richard Berman runs the
Center for Consumer Freedom, the key to Berman’s aggressive strategy
is, in his own words, “to shoot the messenger ... we’ve got to attack
their credibility as spokespersons,” It is not surprising he would
exploit this issue. Those who fund him are involved in the most egregious
forms of animal abuse on a daily basis.
I would guess that
Mr. Tabor gives his readers what they want to read. It would be nice
if his opinion piece actually reflected the whole truth.

Reply from Nathan Tabor:
Emotions
cause people to have blurred vision at times. This is one of
those
times. There are many good people, including myself, who
support animal
rights and don't want them mistreated. However,
two wrongs don't make a
right. Steve has addressed everything except the main fact. PETA killed
healthy animals and then dumped
them in a dumpster. This isn't the first
time this has happened.

I'm sorry
supporters of PETA are disappointed in their organizations lack of
integrity.

Reader - "Exactly How Nuts Does It Have to Get"
Just found your
web-site and enjoy it. I'm a retired USAF MSgt (Master Sergeant) -
1968 to 1989 - and agree that Islam is not a religion of peace. What
really bothers me, however, is that it appears that the Looney Left
and the sheep that follow them are, or already have, converted to
Islam. How else can one explain why they are so upset over alleged
abuses of the Koran and the terrorists at GITMO? Yet, these same Looney
Leftists spit on the Bible, when 87% of the American public claims
to be Christian. (I admit that all 87% are maybe not practicing, but
they still count.)
Until Conservatives stand up to these Leftists,
our country as we know it is going to be gone, and the 7 RINOs that
made the deal with the RATS last week is an example of weakness in
the GOP leadership. The main problem is that too many people in this
country don't give rip about politics, so they listen to the line
of Bull that the Left spreads, and because the GOP doesn't stand up
and shoot them down.
The Lefty's call President Bush & VP Cheney
war criminals because the US invaded Iraq. Clinton invaded the Balkans
WITHOUT congressional approval. For what? To remove Milosevic, the
"leader of a sovereign nation", the same thing the Left is calling
Bush a war criminal for doing in Iraq. Further, Milsovic never had,
nor used, WMD. He had no rape rooms or toture chambers, and the reports
of ethnic cleansing were exaggerated by Newsweek, CNN and the NY Times.
Why didn't the democRATS demonstrate against Clinton?
Keep printing
the truth.
