A Commentary on WMD's
In an article for Parade magazine, published on Aug 1 2004, Retired General Tommy Franks discussed the possibility of WMD’s in Iraq, He mentioned that he had spoken to both the President of Egypt (Hosni Mubarak) and the King of Jordan (King Abdullah), about two months before the invasion of Iraq. Both told him that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. In fact, King Abdullah informed him that “Saddam has WMD - biologicals, actually - and he will use them on your troops. ” Within the hour, he had relayed that information to Washington.
The question of WMD’s will never be answered in a way that will satisfy everyone, but it appears that the President was not the only one who believed that they existed and were in place. Of course, there will be a fringe element that will believe that Jordan and Egypt were united in their attempt to deceive the United States, or that the “New World Order” planned the whole thing.
I want to consider another option. Suppose, in their conversations with General Franks, both leaders were expressing what they believed to be the truth? They are, after all, much closer to Iraq, and thus able to more accurately ascertain what was going on in that country. Too, they probably had the advantage of HUMINT; something sadly lacking for the United States since the mission of the CIA was eviscerated. Yet another thing to consider is the fact that humane treatment by intelligence agencies based in the Middle East is quite likely to be a non-issue, so the amount of data that can be gathered and verified by Jordan and Egypt far exceeds what the CIA can gather.
Of course, an argument can be made for the wondrous miracles of science, including spy satellites that can take a picture of a gnat’s bottom from a thousand miles in the air and determine whether that gnat used Charmin or not, but the technology has its limitations. You see, satellites are in orbit. Usually, a fixed, stable orbit, although some have a small capacity for maneuverability built in. Anything in orbit, having a fixed height and orbital path, can be kept track of. If you can keep track of where a satellite is, you can pretty much figure out when it will be able to take pictures of you. So you have a planned window you can count on, if you wish to move something around and you don’t want people to know that you’re moving it.
Bottom line? If the WMD’s were there, they could very well have been moved in such a way that the limited resources of U. S. intelligence agencies would be unable to detect their movement with any surety. The question then becomes, if both Jordan and Egypt knew that WMD’s existed, what else do they know that they’re not telling us? Do they have any idea where those weapons were moved? Are they remaining silent due to blackmail? Dear reader, form your own conclusions.
If those weapons of mass destruction still exist, and if the terrorists currently have access to them, one is forced to wonder to what purpose they will be put. We have no record of their use in Iraq during the present conflict, other than a botched attempt or two to turn WMD artillery shells into booby traps. If free access to WMD’s were possible, one could logically conclude that the terrorists would be using them. The terrorists are using car bombs in Iraq, now attacking Christian churches, so we can only conclude that either they don’t have the WMD’s or that they’re sequestered for a greater purpose than the disruption of the new Iraqi government.
What greater purpose? The Democratic National Convention is now over, with nothing more exciting than the usual banal speeches by the usual banal people, whilst the expected protestors from the expected protest movements did their thing in an assigned area. At any rate, the terrorists most likely see the Liberals as a likely semi-ally, so the possibility of the convention being attacked was nil. The Republican National Convention is next, with the expected usual banal speeches by the usual banal people, while protestors from various protest movements do their thing. (Of course, some of these protestors will be the same ones that protested the Democratic convention, but that is the way of many Americans.) The likelihood of an attack on the Conservatives is small, as it would give them a chance to say “See, I Told You So!”
Recently, the possibility was raised that terrorists would attempt to disrupt the election itself. Naturally, a host of non-thinking idiots began calling for government intervening by postponing the election. Technically the 2000 election was postponed (at least the results were) while the various legal and political swamps were dragged for monsters and the various idiots of large mouth, small brain, and major television presence pointed fingers in various directions accessing the blame for a multiplicity of nefarious crimes on prominent persons of opposite political belief. At any rate, it’s unlikely that the terrorists would attempt to disrupt thousands of polling places, especially in the South and Southwest, where such an attempt would lead to angering well-armed men and women that believe in the Second Amendment.
Now we are in an increased alert status, because credible evidence has been unearthed that the terrorists are planning another major attack. Probable target? Washington, D.C. is one, but highly unlikely at this time. Why try to create confusion in a city that thrives on it? The city is filled with self-important little gerbils whose only goal in life is to be re-elected to Congress, so they can spend another term running in circles in their little cage wheels, working together to generate enough suction to lighten the wallets of the taxpayers while providing a cornucopias of goodies to promote the feeding (and voting) frenzy of those who pay no taxes at all. New York City is another, but why repeat yourself? An attack on the financial market would greatly upset those with the most money, and promote a response that would likely be fearful, indeed. After all, a lot of
Middle Eastern millionaires (and Middle Eastern countries) invest at Wall Street, including, no doubt, some that help to finance the terrorists. One does not bite the hand of one’s feeder.
North Jersey? There are areas in the major cities of North Jersey that look a lot like Baghdad, although Baghdad is probably more modern. And, in these North Jersey cities, it’s probably less safe for Americans to go out at night than it is in Baghdad. Any use of a WMD in these areas would come under the heading of urban improvement. So, let’s take another look at the nations Fun House, Mental Institution, and Home for the Criminally Insane we affectionately call Washington, D. C. A good place for a WMD. But when? A question easily answered. When would be that time that would have the most Senators and Representatives, the most Department Heads, the most Federal Judges, and the highest number of butt-kissers, sycophants, fawners, yes-men, hangers on, and television crews to get it all live?
