I tend to look on life, and what happens around me, from the advantage of being an old fart, out of tune with the times. I happen to think there’s a lot to be said for being politically incorrect and old at the same time, it seems to allow me to say things that annoy people and just be considered senile.

Oh, I get taken seriously by some people, those that tend to wonder where the heck our country is going to, but I live in an area of Texas that is largely liberal so most people tend to dismiss my rants.

The little enclave on which I live is only two blocks long, and most of us that have our homes here are strongly conservative. Once you get “off the block” however, you enter a different world, one that seems like you need a passport to enter.

Another advantage of being old is remembering when things tended to make sense, and political correctness made no sense whatsoever. It used to be important to know about your country, how it got started, what documents were the precursor to what we have now, what words of wisdom were imparted by those that kick started the country into being…..

Then came California.

Now, it appears that the Declaration of Independence has become a politically incorrect document, along with George Washington's journal, John Adams' diary, Samuel Adams' "The Rights of the Colonists" and William Penn's "The Frame of Government of Pennsylvania.

Let me reminisce a bit, if I may. (Oh, horse feathers, I’m gonna reminisce whether you like it or not, I’m a politically incorrect old fart.) Shortly after I started the 4th grade, a group of men visited our elementary school. Every student in the school was given a gift. The gift was a book, small, cloth bound, with a blue cover I believe. I had it for years, and finally lost it in a house fire at my dad’s house when I was in the Nam. The book contained the following:

  1. A list of the states of the United States, with their capitols.
  2. A list of the Presidents of the United States, with their Vice Presidents.
  3. Copies of the following politically incorrect, subversive documents:
    1. The Declaration of Independence (including such horrific phrases as “…they are endowed by their Creator…””…Nature's God…”, and of course the criminal phrase “…with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence…”)
    2. The Gettysburg Address (in which that monster Lincoln uttered the infamous phrase “…that this nation under God…”)
    3. The Pledge of Allegiance (including the subversive words “…under God…”), and
    4. The Constitution.

Now, it’s been pointed out many times that there is no specific mention of God in the Constitution of the United States.

Well, I’ve got $10,000.00 that says there is no specific phrase “…separation of church and state…” EITHER!

But an idiot in San Francisco says we can’t be teaching children from documents that reference God, even though those documents have a direct bearing on the foundation of our country.

Where’s the outrage? Where are the public meetings being held throughout the country? How many letters and phone calls have gone out to members of Congress?

The ACLU and a minority of idiots are twisting the law of the land to take our country away from us. I can write columns and letters about it, speak out about it, rant about it, express my displeasure with what’s happening, and I will. But it requires a bit more. It requires citizens getting involved. On the local level, to find out the policy in the schools in your area. On the state level, to determine what the policy is of the state Board of Education. On the national level, to let those in Congress know this idiocy in the name of political correctness has got to stop.

What’s happening here is a subtle attack on the history and politics of the United States. Dumb down the students enough, and you can get away with anything.

Before I could go on to high school, I had to take a Civics class. One full year. Six marking periods, six weeks each. Here’s the basic outline, the curriculum:

1st: The government of my city
2nd: The government of my county
3rd: the government of my state
4th: United States government, Executive Branch
5th: United States government, Legislative Branch
6th: United States government, Judicial branch

Back then, it didn’t matter if you were a straight “A” student. (Remember when grades meant something, and report cards were unconcerned with social issues?) If you failed Civics, you were held back. You repeated the school year. You moved on when you demonstrated, through EARNED grades, that you had a basic understanding of government.

Now, that knowledge is being taken away by liberal judges, liberal courts, and liberal organization.

Its time for times to change. Back in 1964, Bob Dylan said it. It’s time for us to let Congress know we mean it.

“Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.”

There’s no better time than now.
